Aim

We’re crowdfunding to keep the skatepark alive. Cost of living has increased, which has put a huge dent in our stability

Who are we?

A small indoor skatepark in Friar’s Walk shopping centre Newport. Our indoor skatepark is an all year round hub for like-minded users from 1 - 54 years of age. We run programs for disadvantaged youths, excluded youths, disabled users, girls only sessions and lessons. In April we ran the first all welsh girls skateboard competition with 22 competitor. We’re home to Newport’s only Queer Skate sessions each month and support volunteers of all ages to become qualified skateboard coaches with recognised qualifications. We’ve been used almost 8,000 by 2,,118 people. The skateparks size is its biggest draw back finically, although the size of the skatepark makes it more intimate for users and there’s a real shared learning experience for those that use it. .

We’ve donated and refurbished over 50 skateboards and donated them along with pads and helmets to people that need them.

We run monthly sessions for over 30’s skateboarders and you wouldn’t believe the standard of the older skaters. This gives adult a well needed session where they can use the space with unconditional positive regard

Every week pre school users from 1- 5 years of age come to the skatepark to experience

We work closely with local Councils and Newport Live to support excluded children from school, to carry out meaningful activities each week

Why are we crowdfunding?

The skatepark has always fallen slightly short of its monthly financial target because we’ve tried keeping the costs as low as we can for users. Funded money had supported the project up till now but we’ve not been able to secure future funding for the project (yet).

The skatepark is in need of some repairs and a few licks of paint also. Much of our equipment is a year old and is getting tatty and could do with being replaced also. We have a coffee machine, which would bring in more income for the skatepark but it would need to be plumed in professionally, which is a big job.

How we’ll spend the money raised

The money raised from crowdfunding will help subsidise rent and utilities over the winter months. As we usually fall short each month.

If we raise enough money there is a possibility of a larger venue close by. A larger venue would make the skatepark more sustainable as it’s capacity is very low right now.

Community impact

The closest indoor skatepark is 25 miles away and not accessible to many youths living in Newport. Our location in the city centre has made the skatepark accessible for lots of people who walk, skate or get the bus in on their own. The local community support has been amazing with over 2000 unique users
