On Friday 27th June, I’ll be skydiving with British Airways, taking a leap not just for the thrill, but for a cause that’s deeply personal to me. I’m raising funds in memory of those we’ve lost to Alzheimer’s and dementia, and for those still fighting.
Right now, 1 in 3 people born in the UK will be diagnosed with dementia in their lifetime. It’s a heartbreaking reality, but with your support, we can help ensure that no one faces this journey alone. Alzheimer’s Society is the UK’s leading support and research charity for people with dementia and their families, providing expert guidance, emotional support, and practical help.
In July 2022, I said goodbye to my grandad, who had been living with dementia for a couple of years. I saw first-hand the devastating effects this disease can have on a person.
Dementia is not a single illness but a group of symptoms caused by different diseases that damage the brain. Over time, these symptoms worsen and may include:
- Memory loss
- Confusion and difficulty with daily tasks
- Problems with language and understanding
- Changes in behaviour
Dementia is progressive, but what it didn’t take away was the love, the laughter, and the countless memories we shared right up until the day he said goodbye.
This was the man who taught me to swim, and who never said no when I squealed, "Again, Grandad, again!". He made the perfect egg and bacon sandwiches every time I stayed over. He always had the biggest smile and a heart full of love. He fuelled my adventurous spirit, and I know he’d be cheering me on for this skydive (probably telling me to go even higher!)
So this one’s for you, Grandad. 💙
Any donation, big or small, will make a huge difference. I hope this small leap of faith will help honour those we’ve lost and support those still fighting.
Thank you from the bottom of my heart.
