Help us scale training and mentorship bootcamps for jobseekers facing barriers to employment from under-represented communities

Who are Generation?

Generation is a charity with the mission to support diverse groups of people facing barriers to employment into life-changing careers across the UK.

And we're looking for your support to grow our work further!

What do we do?

We run free, full-time, multi-month profession-specific training bootcamps with extensive wrap-around support from expert mentors and coaches.  At the end of bootcamps we matchmake learners to interview for opportunities at our employer partners.  

We run bootcamps across the UK and since launching in 2019 we've supported well over 1,000 people into amazing jobs.  In these jobs in in-demand professions they earn on average more than three times their income before our support (typically universal credit!). These are life-changing opportunities in a society challenged by a cost-of-living crisis and where far too many jobs lead to in-work poverty.

Who do we work with?

We focus on supporting diverse groups of learners and facing a range of different and unique challenges finding desirable and meaningful work.  

Our learners overall are >70% from ethnic minority groups in the UK, >20% unemployed for over a year, <40% without a degree, >20% with a disability, and super age and gender diverse.  

Our learners on average have 4 different barriers to work and represent the groups data consistently show are excluded from good jobs and over-represented amongst the unemployed across the UK.

What impact do we have?

We equip our learners through our innovative, profession-specific programmes we equip them with the skills they need to start and thrive in work as a cloud computing engineer, data analyst, data engineer, IT support technician, healthcare assistant and/or energy efficiency advisor.  These are high-demand jobs, where employers often struggle to hire, and offer amazing career progression.

A sector-leading >70% of our learners find work and meaningful employment with our support.  Not only that, but >90% say that they feel more confident in their future upon finishing our support and years later we see the vast majority of our alumni still in life-changing work.

The impact however goes far beyond the numbers... Let's take Javeriyah's story. Javeriyah was a student on our first Cloud bootcamp in 2019. Having been promoted twice she’s now a Systems Engineer at Direct Line. 

In her own words…

“I had a pretty tough couple of years before joining the bootcamp, and a lot of other students had their tough stories too. It was nice having real conversations about mental health and life and giving each other motivation to move forward  [Generation] changed my life. I wouldn’t be the level I am today without the bootcamp and the help of Generation.  I was overwhelmed by the messages I would receive from young brown or Muslim girls, all saying they never thought they could break into Cloud engineering but after seeing that video they now want to try.”

Why are we fundraising?

We're proud of our track record and impact and now eager to grow our work at this crucial time.  We're looking for funding to support the delivery of two bootcamps in London to support up to 50 unemployed people on a journey into-life changing work in the tech sector in roles working with data.

Funding will be used to provide learners with laptops and internet connections to allow them to access the course and to support the cost of expert, subcontracted instructors to teach them the key skills they need as Generation provides the wrap--around support and employer-designed curricula.
